The blogosphere tilted on its axis slightly last week when Donald Knuth had a birthday, and every Computer Science geek rushed to provide a tribute.
I would forgive them their enthusiasm – after all Donald Knuth is to Computer Science what Newton was to Physics. If you look into interesting areas in virtually any field of Computer Science, you’ll find Knuth was there first.
What I won’t forgive is that none of the dozen or so tributes I read to him mentioned his greatest ever paper.
For shame!

“after all Donald Knuth is to Computer Science was Newtown was to Physics. ”
was that meant to say…
“after all Donald Knuth is to Computer Science what Newton was to Physics. ”
tho i must say there are a lot of Usyd physicists i know who end up in Newtown for the cheap Thai food…since they can’t afford anything more 🙂

A rare internet moment: the phrase
