Online Photo DB: Stage 3 – Identify possible solutions

This post is part of the Online Photo Database project documentation. Learn more about the project’s current status.

Here is my list of software/sites that I am considering for my next version of the Online Photo DB. Some of them have already been reviewed against my requirements.

Third-Party Hosted Solutions

Self-Managed Solutions

I am very open to suggestions for others that I should consider.

Note: I see there are a lot of other people who have done similar evaluations. I have some reading to do.

Update: Added Windows Live, My Picture Town, PixelPost, PhotoQ PhotoBlog, PhpWebGallery. Categorised into self-managed and hosted. Added links to evaluations as they occurred, and then later moved them to the status page.

  1. I noticed some changes to Picasa Web Albums today that might be of interest.

For starters, there’s a brand-new feature called “name tags” in Picasa Web Albums that helps you quickly label all the people in your photos, so you can organize and share your photos based on who’s in the picture. Name tags uses advanced technology to automatically group similar faces together. That way, you can quickly label all the people you care about in your photo collection. Once you’ve labeled your photos, it’s then a snap to do things like create a slideshow with every picture of you and your best friend, or easily share party photos with everybody who appears in that photo album. 2. For quick reference, how did each of these tools go against the requirements? Is there a count of how many criticals/importants/desirables passed for each? For those that get ?, Y? or N?, I’d give a partial score – maybe 0.5, 0.8 and 0.2 each. Either that, or each is truly Y and N, and I’d give the range of possible passes or fails that this tool has.

This could also lift the long excruciating process of evaluating so many similar systems from pure academic interest to me to more like the quality of an election tally count… Who’s cuisine photo DB reigns supreme?
